Brief history

The Faculty of Mathematics was founded in 1948 as part of the Pedagogical Institute of Timisoara, under the name of Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. In 1952 the Mathematics-Physics division, and in 1960 the Geometry division were created.

The decision to turn the Pedagogical Institute into the University of Timisoara came on October 16, 1962. Within the University, a Faculty of Mathematics-Mechanics was created with the following majors: Geometry, Mathematical Analysis, and Mathematics-Physics.

In 1974 the Faculty of Mathematics-Mechanics and the faculties of Physics, Biology and Physical Education merged into a Faculty of Natural Sciences, which existed until 1990.

In 1990 the Faculty of Natural Sciences was divided into the Faculty of Mathematics and Faculty of Physics.
The presently existent majors were created as follows:
  • Computer Science, in 1971
  • Mathematics-Physics, in 1981
  • Computer Science for evening classes, in 1984
  • Applied Mathematics, in 1992
  • Pure Mathematics, in 1995
  • Information Technology, in 1995
  • Office Management, in 1997
  • Mathematics and Computer Science, in 1998
